Brake fluid changes as it ages

Most motorcycle brake fluids are hygroscopic, which means they absorb moisture from the surrounding air. As water content increases, the boiling point falls and internal corrosion becomes more likely. Fluid can age even when the motorcycle has low mileage.

Colour is useful but not the only test

Dark fluid, visible contamination or sediment are clear reasons for attention, but fluid can contain moisture before it looks severely discoloured. Follow the motorcycle manufacturer's maintenance schedule and consider storage conditions, climate and riding use.

Soft feel can have several causes

A soft lever or pedal may be caused by air in the system, old fluid, hose expansion, worn components or an external leak. Any sudden change in braking feel should be inspected before riding. Simply topping up the reservoir does not correct the underlying issue.

ABS systems require careful service

Modern ABS motorcycles may have additional procedures to move fluid through the hydraulic control unit. Correct fluid specification, clean handling and proper bleeding technique matter. Brake fluid also damages paint, so the motorcycle should be protected during service.

Combine brake service with a safety inspection

A brake-fluid change is a useful time to inspect pad thickness, rotors, hoses, calipers and controls. EZ Performance includes brake-system service in selected maintenance packages and can complete the work at an appropriate on-site location.
