Set tire pressure while the tires are cold
Use the motorcycle manufacturer's pressure specification and inspect tread for cuts, embedded objects, cracking and uneven wear. A tire that feels acceptable in city traffic may feel very different during sustained highway riding.
Confirm brakes and fluid levels
Check lever and pedal feel, visible pad thickness and fluid levels. Any sudden change in braking feel, fresh leak or warning light deserves attention before the trip.
Inspect the final drive and controls
Measure chain slack, inspect sprockets and apply lubricant after cleaning. Confirm that the throttle closes freely, the clutch is adjusted correctly and steering movement feels smooth.
Test charging and lighting
A battery can start the motorcycle while still being weak. Check charging voltage when there is any history of slow cranking. Verify headlights, brake lights, signals and accessory wiring before leaving.
Plan for changing conditions
Temperatures and wind can change quickly north of Vancouver. Carry an extra layer, keep fuel range in mind and leave enough time to ride without rushing.
